Description:  Caltrain 906 rolls out of Diridon northbound. While it may seem like a rather run-of-the-mill day on the Peninsula, big changes are happening. Just the day before this picture was taken, the first of 19 Stadler EMU sets was delivered to the Caltrain shops north of San Jose Diridon. These EMUs will replace the F40PHs and gallery cars Caltrain has used for almost 40 years.

Description:  Caltrain F40PHs idle at San Jose Diridon in mid April. The two venerable units, the 906 and 909, have operated on the Peninsula Commute for almost 40 years, having been built in 1985 by EMD. The 909 has just arrived on train #410 southbound, while 906 will soon depart on train #413 northbound. Note that 906 is operating with a set of Caltrains Bombardier Bi-Level coaches, while 909 is running with the older Nippon-Sharyo gallery cars.

Description:  Caltrain 906 shoves one more northbound out of Diridon as the sun sets in the west. The 1985-vintage F40 is in charge of train #269 northbound, a weekend service to San Francisco. Leaving at 8:12 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, the train wont reach San Fran until nearly 10 PM, where the equipment will likely spend the night.

Title:  Twilight Outbound
Description:  As the sun sets, Caltrain 906 growls out of San Jose Diridon with another load of northbound commuters. The aging F40 has been serving the peninsula for nearly 40 years, having entered service in 1985. After 37 years of constant use, age is beginning to catch up to the old beasts. As evidenced by the catenary wires that have sprung up along the peninsula, the F40s are facing their final days, as the first of 19 7-car EMU sets begin to arrive. 906 will have two years at best before it will inevitably be retired. It is unknown if any of Caltrains 23 F40 models will be preserved.
